J. C. Vanmetre was Thomas's father and Thomas' first stepmother was Susan Kincaid Vanmetre. Thomas' stepmother Susan was sister to Thomas' wife, Elizabeth Anna Kincaid. Susan and Elizabeth's brother, ? Kincaid (probably James M. Kincaid), died 21 Jun 1888 in Muldaugh, Meade Co., KY and was "buried in Summit on the 23 of June at Mr. J. C. Vanmeters," according to newspaper accounts.

His generation began to change the Vanmetre name to Vanmeter.

She lived in NE, Knox Co., Herrick on 28 June 1900. Elizabeth lived in NE, Knox Co., Eastern on 27 April 1910. Her daughter Minnie Birdsell and family lived with them. She died on 14 May 1918 in NE, Knox Co., Crofton. She was buried in May 1918 in NE, Knox Co., Crofton, Crofton City Cemetery. She went by the name Anna.

Her brother James Kincaid was surety for her marriage.
